About Us

The RECC Center is powered by Voices For Independence - a Center for Independent Living that equips and empowers persons with disabilities to live independently in the community. A majority of the staff and board of directors at VFI are people with disabilities. The RECC Center will be open to the community and will sponsor a multitude of activities in partnership with community organizations.

This project will include opportunities for patrons to increase their physical and mental skills, by participating in craft classes, board games, puzzles, musical classes, scouting, and a community choir. RECC Center will partner with other organizations/ agencies to facilitate additional recreational activities such as basketball, wheelchair basketball, soccer, baseball, archery, and other sporting activities. Various opportunities for exercise will be offered in classes, and walking and jogging clubs. There will be entertainment evenings which will feature local talent, karaoke and dances.

The RECC Center will partner with local hospitals and institutions of higher education to be utilized by their interns as part of their educational experience as well as affording mentoring opportunities. Erie is fortunate to have four (4) colleges and universities (Mercyhurst, Gannon, Edinboro, and Behrend Campus of Penn State University), in addition to a fully accredited osteopathic medical college (LECOM).

It is hoped that community support for the RECC Center concept will make it a reality in the near future.
