The One Stop Shop
A group of people, with disabilities, came together out of their frustration over their common situation involving physical therapy. Each of them spoke of the fact that they were released from physical therapy because they were not making sufficient progress and the insurance only pays for a certain number of visits per year. There are also no accessible fitness centers in the Erie County area, if they could afford the memberships. They spoke about all the places they could not go with their families.
They brainstormed on several occasions and thus the RECC center was born. RECC stands for Recreation, Exercise, Creativity, and Community. It is a place that embodies the motto: "The One Stop Shop for the Mind, Body, and Soul."
RECC-ing the Barriers
The RECC Center is currently powered by Voices for Independence. Although VFI is sponsoring us for now, we do plan to break away and become our own institution. The entire staff of the RECCing Crew is made up of VFI consumers and staff members. All have given much of their own time and resources to bring this dream into fruition.
